Medical clearance

  • Complete a history and physical with your primary care physician within 30 days of surgery.
  • Lab work and an EKG if requested based on your age and medical history.
  • Share a complete list of medications and supplements with the office.
  • Confirm any additional clearances the office has asked you to obtain.

2 weeks before surgery

  • Stop aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), fish oil, vitamin E, and most herbal supplements unless your physician directs otherwise.
  • Stop nicotine in every form: cigarettes, vaping, patches, and gum. Nicotine meaningfully increases healing complications in facial surgery.
  • Avoid alcohol, which worsens bruising and swelling.
  • Fill your prescriptions early so they are waiting at home.
  • Arrange a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you the first night.

The night before

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight, including water, gum, mints, and coffee.
  • Wash your face and hair with a gentle cleanser and shampoo.
  • Remove makeup, nail polish, jewelry, and facial piercings.
  • Set out loose, front-buttoning clothing so nothing needs to go over your head.

The day of surgery

  • Wear a button-front or zip-front top and comfortable pants. No pullovers.
  • Leave contact lenses, makeup, lotions, and perfume at home.
  • Bring your ID, insurance card, and your driver.
  • Prepare your recovery space: extra pillows for head elevation, cold compresses, soft foods, and a water bottle with a straw.
